Elvis – A Musical Revolution at Melbourne’s Athenaeum theatre.
A key component of self-care and wellbeing is Fun! Fun and Connection is even better! Fun, connection and a musical makes my heart sing.
Last night I got to see Elvis – A Musical Revolution at Melbourne’s Athenaeum theatre. It was joyous and warm, lively and engaging and just plain fun.
I hadn’t seen this musical before and whilst I’m not a die-hard fan of Elvis – I do appreciate the music.
I might be a bigger fan after last night. Rob Mallet absolutely nails Elvis’ signature gyration (and I mean nails it) and his voice is amazing. Lots of depth and feeling. We recognised the very sexy Kirby Burgess from Cruel Intentions fame and adored her turn as Ann-Margaret – her dancing especially was excellent. The rest of the cast worked together seamlessly. A couple of really touching Blues numbers really showed the roots of Elvis’s distinct style.
I hadn’t realised how many of Elvis’s songs I knew.
The toe tapping started almost immediately. Having said that – it did take about twenty minutes to get into and both my girlfriend and I didn’t warm to Rob Mallet immediately. Physically he is much slighter than Elvis and the hair seemed a little manufactured but there is a moment, singing with his mother which is poignant and then I felt myself turn towards and from then on, he had me in the palm of his hands. It is definitely a performance that builds to a magical crescendo. The finale is everything you’d want. Musical perfection covered in delicious gold sequins.
We sang and we danced. We smiled and were mesmerised. It was a fun and joyous night out to the theatre. Highly recommended.
